The site boasted two separate chemical bunds, with one housing 25% Sodium Hydroxide, a solution used to adjust pH levels and neutralise acidity while treating water. The other contained a tank with 40% Ferric Sulphate, a liquid coagulation agent used for treating wastewater before disposal.
The previous protective coatings that had been used to line the bunds had failed and there were clear signs of chemical erosion to the concrete substrate beneath. It was crucial to repair the concrete and replace the protective lining as soon as possible, as a chemical spill from the tanks might have a damaging effect on the wider environment.
We were employed to bring the bunds back up to standard. We began the project by using a high-pressure water jetting unit to remove the old, failed coatings and prepare the concrete substrate beneath to be repaired using a micro concrete and then to receive its new coating system – a 5-stage Vinyl ester Glass flake System from Chemco, designed to protect the site from chemical spills long into the future.
