Project Overview
CSC Services was appointed alongside BCE Northern to carry out specialist concrete repair works to the Northumberland Road footbridge. The works addressed delaminated and spalling concrete, exposed reinforcement, and failed concrete cover, helping restore the durability of the structure.
The challenge
The repairs had to be delivered within a highly constrained access window, with closures available only between 4:00am and 11:00am on two Sunday mornings.
All breakout, preparation, treatment, repair, and reinstatement activities had to be completed safely and efficiently within this short possession period.
Scope of works
- Break out loose, defective, delaminated, and spalling concrete
- Expose and mechanically prepare reinforcing steel
- Saturate the concrete substrate with clean water via jet wash
- Apply Flexcrete Steel Protector 841
- Reinstate repair areas using Flexcrete Fastfill
- Complete works from MEWPs during restricted road closures
Our approach
Detailed planning and careful sequencing allowed the team to maximise productivity during the closure period. Operatives used MEWPs to safely access the underside and elevations of the footbridge, while close supervision ensured quality control and compliance with the specified concrete repair system.
Outcome
The works were successfully completed within the allocated closure periods, restoring defective concrete areas, protecting exposed reinforcement, and extending the service life of the structure while minimising disruption.
