New phase of concrete remediation work completed at North Tees Hospital

We’ve recently completed the next phase of an extensive planned concrete remediation work at the University Hospital of North Tees, following previous successful phases.

For this part of the project, we completed refurbishment works on the building which houses plant rooms, specialist operating theatres and recovery rooms.

Due to the sensitive nature of the building we were working in, it was essential that all works were carried out with zero noise or disruption to hospital staff, patients and their families. Any works which would cause disruption had to be carried out during weekends when the operating theatres weren’t in use.

Before

The services we carried out for this concrete remediation work scheme included:

  • Installing access scaffolding
  • Hydro demolition to remove the existing deteriorated concrete
  • Repairs to areas of deteriorated concrete
  • Steel protection
  • Migrating coatings
  • Application of pore filler/fairing coats
  • Three coat anti-carbonation coating system in “Brilliant Blue”

The project

Leading construction supplies distributor and CSC partners Resapol supplied Sika products for this project to refurbish.

The surfaces were primed using Sikagard 552W Aquaprimer and Sikagard 550W Elastic was applied to provide comprehensive protection against future weather damage.

The products we used included Sika MonoTop 610, a cementitious polymer modified primer used to protect exposed areas of steel reinforcement, Sika MonoTop 615, a hand placed repair mortar, Sika MonoTop 620, designed to reduce absorption of water and salts by blocking the concrete’s pores, also leaving a fair face to take subsequent coatings, and Sika FerroGard 903+, a migrating coating was used to protect the encased steel from further corrosion.

These products combined result in long-lasting protection against carbonation caused by weather conditions and provide a 10-year guarantee to first maintenance.

All concrete repair work was carried out to BSEN1504 standard by our fully trained operatives. As Sika-approved contractors, our staff also undertake regular training to ensure the products we used are installed correctly.
