At EDF’s Hartlepool Power Station, CSC Services was tasked with carrying our essential remediation works on a reactor vent stack support beam. These stacks, towering 120 metres high, play a vital role in the safe and reliable operation of the plant. Any structural weakness could lead to costly downtime during statutory shutdowns, making timely and effective repairs crucial.
This project came with several challenges. The beam’s height and location meant that all work had to be carefully planned to ensure safety. High internal temperatures, reaching around 35 °C, limited the time available for concrete to cure. Sensitive equipment beneath the beam required strict dust and debris control to prevent damage. On top of these obstacles, the work had to be completed within a 40-day shutdown window, leaving no room for delays. Precision, expertise and careful coordination were essential to deliver the project successfully.
CSC Services approached the project methodically to restore the beam’s strength and durability. The damaged concrete was carefully removed using dust-minimising tools, ensuring the sensitive systems below were protected. Hand-applied fibre-reinforced mortar was then used to repair the structure, providing a strong, long-lasting finish even in challenging heat conditions. To further enhance durability, the beam was wrapped in carbon fibre, adding strength and flexibility without increasing weight.
Throughout the project, directors remained on site to oversee progress, while our fully trained and certified team ensured every step was completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard. The outcome was a reinforced beam, delivered on time, within budget, and ready for the reactor’s return to service.
