Hydrodemolition contractors: our guide to hydrodemolition

Hydrodemolition is a popular technique for removing deteriorated concrete using high-pressured water jets in preparation for the installation of a cathodic protection system. As hydrodemolition contractors, we use this technique for the vast majority of our refurbishment projects. Read our guide to hydrodemolition to find out more.

Guide to hydrodemolition

Hydrodemolition (sometimes known as waterjetting or hydroblasting) is the primary method we use to remove large areas of deteriorated concrete. The technique was first developed in Sweden in the 1980s by a team looking for safer alternatives to traditional methods of removing concrete on bridges damaged by salt and frost and is now used universally as an accurate and cost-effective solution.

At CSC, we use specialist high-pressured water jets with pressures up to 36,000 PSI (pounds per square inch) to target the areas of concrete we need to remove. The jets allow us to be incredibly accurate, even in confined or difficult spaces. The result is a clean removal of the existing concrete, exposing the underlying structural systems without affecting areas which don’t need treatment.

Why use hydrodemolition contractors?

There are a number of benefits of using hydrodemolition over other more traditional techniques.

Cost-effective solution

Hydrodemolition is a quick and effective process with a high level of accuracy. This makes it much more cost-effective than traditional methods as we are able to target the required areas while leaving the rest of the surface intact. The speed of the process also means we can dramatically reduce operational downtime to your business.

Reduced noise pollution

Hydrodemolition is much quieter than traditional heavy duty methods using hydraulic/mechanical tools. The acoustic impact to the wider environment is lower, which is especially good for projects working in sensitive environments such as hospitals, where noise pollution can cause issues.

Environmentally friendly

Unlike traditional methods, hydrodemolition produces little to no dust. Concrete dust can be incredibly disruptive to the environment and has an impact on air pollution. By contrast, hydrodemolition simply produces waste water which can be collected and treated before being discharged to natural water sources.

Safer for structures and contractors

Hydrodemolition is widely regarded by experts as the safest method of concrete removal. Traditional techniques, such as those which use hydraulic power tools, cause vibrations which can cause cracks and damage the surrounding structure. Using accurate water jets we are able to specifically target the areas of concrete we need to, without impacting the surrounding concrete or wider structure. Not only is hydrodemolition better for retaining structural integrity, the lack of vibration and reduced noise levels mean it is also a safer option for workers, reducing the risk of workplace injury.

Effective results

Hydrodemolition produces a rough and bondable surface which is ideal for further treatment. Following concrete removal we are able to complete repairs and then apply primers and coatings.
