Surface Water Chamber Refurbishment

Restoring Protection for a Critical Drainage Asset

CSC Services refurbished a surface water drain chamber at Dungeness B Power Station for EDF Energy. The chamber forms an essential part of the site’s drainage network and is also the authorised minor discharge route for waste condensate water.

Although structurally sound, the chamber had developed voids within the mortar and crack around the pipe penetrations. These defects posed a risk to environmental compliance and required a robust solution that could withstand elevated temperatures from discharged water.

Repairing and Protecting the Chamber

To restore the chamber and provide long-term protection, CSC Services applied Cemprotec E942 from Flexcrete – a proven cementitious coating designed for high performance durability.

This water-based system offers exceptional resistance to water, chloride ions, oxygen and aggressive chemicals. Its versatility also allows it to act as a standalone anti-corrosion coating for ferrous metals, as well as waterproofing and protective layer for concrete exposed to chemical and abrasion challenges.

Before repairs could begin, the drain was blocked and allowed to dry, and an over-pumping system installed to isolate the working area. A key requirement for this project was rapid curing, enabling the chamber to be returned to service quickly and maintaining the reliability of the site’s surface water drainage system.

Delivered Safely, Efficiently and to Programme

The project involved confined space entry and was subject to plant isolation procedures, which were delayed by one day. Despite this, CSC Services completed all works to a high standard and within the agreed programme.

"CSC Services worked with EDF Energy's Investment Delivery team in recommending and agreeing suitable products for the chamber refurbishment. The work required confined space access and was subject to plant isolation, which was delayed by one day. Despite the delay, CSC Services completed the work to a very high standard and within programme."
